AEthelmearc Vote Raises Questions

The recent poll on whether AEthelmearc should become a separate kingdom from the East produced a close vote among members in Coppertree, and since the poll some SCA members have complained of not being contacted. A discussion at fight practice brought up several controversial proposals, inculding a repolling and the possibility of splitting Coppertree into two shires, based on the results of the current vote or the repolling. There will be a meeting todiscuss these issues at Rhiannon's house after the War, on Thursday, August 29, 7-ish. Anyone interested in the future of Coppertree is urged to appear.

Pax Interruptus:

It Never Rains in Thescorre, But Man, It Pours

by Mathilde

Pax Interruptus, held as usual in a leaf-shaded gorge overlooking a swiftly moving river, had pleasant summer weather and a slew of happy campers and day-trippers. We were too far west to encounter Hurricane Bertha, which drenched most of the East Coast, and aside from the usual herds of Daddy-long-legs roaming over our belongings, it was a swell day to be outdoors, unlike other years in which Umpa-Lumpas sang dirges over the chocolate river while our tents washed away.

Master John the Pell had the fighters practicing small unit tactics during the day, while the fencers vanished somewhere "up the hill" and came back all sweaty and cheerful. At the baronial and principality courts, the guilds of Thescorre, the Baron and Baroness of Thescorre, and the Prince and Princess of AEthelmearc took turns handing out awards, tokens, scrolls, prizes, eggs, bags, feathers, spoons, and gifts to all and sundry. No one leaves without a door prize! A mellow crowd saluted the recessional of their Highnesses and Excellencies by shouting, "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah" after them.

Some of the awards were a golden spoon for cooking above and beyond, awarded to Mistress Michaele del Vaga from the Cauldron Bleu, the cook's guild of Thescorre; a Keystone to Baroness Mistress Daedra MacBeth a Gryphon for years of service; and an AOA to our friend Sorcia of the Lakes. Mistress Michaele also got a round of applause for taking over the principality treasurer's job; she threatened to wear the Great Hat of Aethelmearc, a large, red, escarbuncled artifact designed by Dr. Suess, at events, unless groups start giving Aethelmearc money more often. The Thescorre Shoppers' Guild rewarded mercantile prowess with red, yellow, and green bags for varying levels of fiscal friskiness. Everyone had a fun day in the gorge, and we headed back to Rochester in high spirits.

Brewing Web Sites Feature Local Meadery

A search of the World Wide Web reveals much information about making, drinking, and purchasing mead. The fullest references can be found on the Mead Brewer's Web Page, which has cute graphics, an opening poem, and lots of recipes contributed by people who know what they are doing. The recipes do presume some basic brewing knowledge. The page also has links to other web sites, including the home page of the Earle Estates Meadery in Locke, NY, southwest of Syracuse in the Finger Lakes. The meadery handed out samples at the New York State Fair last summer. This autumn they plan a "Honey Festival" Sept. 14-15th. Directions to the meadery are on the web page.

Ye Blast from Ye Past: Pennsic XII

From the Driftwood, September XVIII:

Dateline: Pennsic

In sweltering 100+weather, the Canton of Coppertree fighters underwent their first baptism by fire, although they had to join the Midrealm to see action. The numerical superiority of the East had led to victory in the woods and causeway battles, while the Mid had triumphed in archery and the battle of champions. Now the ranks of both armies were arrayed, waiting for the deciding field battle, and it looked like victory for the East again.

The Midrealm king addressed the Eastern armies, asking for volunteers to join his cause and to even things up a bit. Suddenly the spectators gasped as a familiar blue-and-white group broke ranks and headed for the Mid army, along with some Myrkfaelinnites. Baron André and Delftwood were deserting! Cheered by the Midrealm fighers, our boys had the blue tape ripped off their helms and red applied. They proceeded to die gloriously on the field and to party out even more gloriously that night with the Midrealm ("Drive to Ohio!*")

P.S. Yes, the East still won.

*The rallying cry for the late-night beer run.
