HM Bjorn crowns Duke Master Lucan.
by MathildeThis year's Spring Crown was held about as far north as you can get in New York, in the Shire of Northern Outpost. This was easily an eight or nine-hour drive for those fighters living in Long Island, Connecticut, Maine or New Jersey, and may have been the reason that only thirty-two entered the competition. Those urban dwellers who did make the long journey entered a land that time may not have actually forgotten, but certainly a rural area where "Buck" and "Doe" appear on restroom doors and coffee creamer comes out of the mouth of a little cow jug.The Betting Man's Guide listed a lot of familiar faces, including many who had sat on the Coppertree Throne of Power at our Tuesday night practice. And, when the mud of battle cleared, Duke Lucan, flushed with pride, had tidily vanquished the rest of the field. The fighters in the semis were, besides the Master, Sir Teric of Gwynedd, fighting for his lady, Paigan Crawford; Duke Randal of the Dark; and Sir Eirikr Lambson. More familiar faces in the crowd included Duke Morghun Sheridan and Viscount Haakon Oaktall, fighting a bout; Lady Elisheva and Lord Arik, schmoozing with Duchess Rowan; and Prince Yngvar and Princess Caryl of Aethelmearc, heaping cloaks on Baron Dain ("Dad") to keep him warm at ringside. Lucan and his princess, Mistress Baroness Elspeth Keyfe of Neddingham, were crowned on the field by TRM, and a grateful crowd headed indoors for shelter from the intermittent showers. At court, Baroness Ygraine of Preston was surprised when a number of letters were read praising her work as Tyger Clerk of the Sygnet and asking that she be made a Pelican, a request that was cheerfully filled by Bjorn and Morgen. Their Majesties also presented Viscount Master Sir Master Edward Zifran of Gendy with a blank book so that he might inscribe on its pages the legendary tales of his youth in the Society for the entertainment of his lady, Elizabeth Talbot. Queen Morgen appointed Duncan Thorfinnson as Captain of the Queen's Guard, and she and King Bjorn awarded Duncan a Silver Crescent for service to the East as well. Kenric of Northhampton, Aleric Wolfgang von Mellinthen, and Puppy were also appointed to the Queen's Guard; they donned the purple sashes of service and were later seen breaking down the thrones and carrying them out to the royal van, a task which will grow increasingly familiar to all the Guardians as the reign continues. Even though court ran two hours over schedule, the Outpost cooks and servers, headed by Morgana Devereaux as guest chef, produced a fine and plentiful feast, featuring a venison stew among other specialties. After the festivities we retired to our sweet little knotty-pine-panelled cottages, furnished by a local college, for some discreet wilderness partying (however, Natty Bumppo didn't stop by to demonstrate his deerslaying abilities, sigh). After a cheerful breakfast shared with the other cottagers we motored back to civilization, which in these here parts begins somewhere around Lowville, to bring the news of our new prince back to Copppertree. The Shire of the Northern Outpost, with the aid of Orion's Gate, put on a pleasant and well-run event that made the long trip seem worthwhile to everyone who braved the bucolic hinterlands of northern New York. | |
